BOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox placed struggling third baseman Will Middlebrooks on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a fractured right index finger and recalled infielder Brock Holt from Triple-A Pawtucket. The 25-year old Middlebrooks suffered the injury in Fridays loss to Detroit when he attempted to field a line drive in the first inning. Its his second trip to the DL this season after missing 19 games with a strained right calf in April. Red Sox manager John Farrell was unsure how long Middlebrooks will be sidelined, but said hell be in a splint for five to seven days before attempting anything. "Depending on how he responds to treatment after that, thats when well first look to initiate any baseball activities," Farrell said. "Its hard to say how long hell be down."
